Tuesday Afternoon Followup

An update from Victor Polek, Jay's Brother in Law:

I spoke with Jay's neurologist, Dr. An at about 2:00 pm.

The CT scan and EEG show that Jay is experiencing significant swelling in his brain, and some bleeding. The swelling is caused by injury to his brain due to a lack of oxygen when his heart stopped early Saturday morning. Such swelling usually peaks about 3 days later, which is about the time last night that Jay suffered a couple of small seizures. They gave him medication to control the seizures, but he has once again entered a very dangerous time. They can't do any surgery to relieve the brain swelling because of his bleeding complications. If the swelling becomes too severe it could compress his cerebral cortex enough to cause brain death. The greatest risk of that is over the next 24-48 hours.

Should Jay get past that point the swelling should subside, but there is doubt as to whether Jay will actually recover any function. Despite being on a lower sedative level, he is not responsive to pain at this time.

I am sorry to have to report Dr. An said that from the perspective of his brain injury alone, while the situation is not completely hopeless, Jay's prognosis is poor.

At this point it will take a mighty miracle to save Jay and restore him to health. We have no doubt of God's ability to do just that, and we ask for fervent prayer that He will show His mighty hand with just such a miracle to His glory. All the same, we trust in His ultimate wisdom, and ask that His will be done.

  2. Precious Jay,
You’ve made us smile with your fantasic memory of every possible family occasion; you’ve encouraged us to hope when we were walking in hard places; you’ve been an ever ready source of hugs. Oh, how we wish we could make you smile now. How we wish we could pour hope and encouragement into your tired body and give you hugs which would minister to your spirit. We carry you in our hearts and in our prayers, trusting Almighty God to cradle you in his loving arms while working out the best for you. May the Lord be your shield and your resting place, your joy and your comfort, dear friend.

    Love, Carol and Steve Meier

  5. Jay, I know prayer works because my wife Joyce just came through a dangerous pancreatic infection and recovered. I know your condition is more serious, but God made every molecule of our bodies and he knows how to heal them. I join all the others who are praying and asking God for that one more miracle you need to recover. May it be so in Jesus' name. Amen!
